Fantastic place, wonderful hosts
The castle is beautiful, quiet and calm and comfortable with all necessary mod cons. The grounds and views are to die for! Our hosts Mario and Erminia were fantastic, friendly and helpful and generous. Our stay couldn't have been better. I recommend Pianettoli to everyone.

Incredible Tuscan Experience at the Castle
Our group stayed at Pianetolle in July 2015 and we loved it! This castle was the perfect place for our group of 6 (2 couples with 13 year old daughters) to experience Tuscany and its beauty for a week. We appreciated the warmth and hospitality provided by owners Mario and Erminia and their two dogs. Pianetolle is on the top of a hill right near the walled midieval village of Anghiari and we stayed in the castle building with 4 beautiful bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, along with a kitchen and sitting area. This is not your cookie cutter experience - each room had its own charm and beauty, reflecting the history and feel of the region/area. Since Italy was experiencing a heat wave during the week we visited, we fully appreciated the pool each day. We were only a few minutes drive from Anghiari and we also took day trips to Sansepolcro, Sienna, and Florence (took the train from nearby Arezzo). We also spent time at a favorite cafe on the piazza in Aghiari and spent our Wednesday night eating pizza at Baldacchi on the piazza and enjoyed the music and festivities that night. We also were able to attend a festival on Friday night in Sansepolcro and enjoyed a progressive dinner there. We loved returning to the castle each evening to stargaze and swim. We loved staying at this castle - full of character, history and charm - we would love to return!

Great week with family
Spent a week at Castle of Pianettole, great time for all. Each granddaughter had a bedroom, son and wife a bedroom and my wife and I had one. More food than we could eat in a week was on hand, Thank You Mario. We took day trips to Arezzo, Florence, and Siena. The real treat was the Battle of Anghiari, all the folks dressed in 15th century garb. The run up the hill was so special. If you time it right, you can see both the Paleo and the horse race in Siena. Granddaughter used the pool every day, the last night, Mario and his wife recommended a pizza place "in the pines". Great local place, kids running everywhere, I think we were the only tourists in the place. First day, met a guy from England in the market, His name is Barry, what a guy. He gave me the inside scoop on everything he could. Do not miss the Michelin restaurant. Great meal. You will need a car, but worth it. Thank You Mario and Hermine for opening your home, we will not forget your warm hospitality.

Wonderful historic castle
Forget Chiantishire - here's your chance to enjoy the real Tuscany, in this quirky castle packed with history. We enjoyed two weeks here with our family - loving the homely feel of the house, the pool and garden, enjoying great family meals, and exploring the neighbourhood. Anghiari was an unexpected gem of a medieval walled village with good restaurants and excellent local shops, while Sansepolcro was packed with interest including the market and the not-to-be-missed Aboca Museum. With an excellent train service from nearby Arezzo, the whole of Tuscany is easily accessible. Mario and Hermine were wonderful hosts and we thoroughly recommend Pianettole. Reached by a winding track up the mountain, access is not for the faint-hearted, but quite manageable and we loved the views. The main bathroom is up a fairly challenging old staircase, so not recommended for anyone with mobility problems.

A Gem Hidden in Tuscany
Wonderful hosts, wonderful location and the ideal place to base yourself for discovering Tuscany all the way from Florence to Montepulciano. I cannot recommend Mario and Hermine more highly, we had a wonderful time at Pianettole and Mario went out of his way to make sure our stay was perfect. We stayed for 8 nights and would come back again in the future. Pianettole was worth it just for the views from the mountain at dawn or dusk.

Amazing...Simply Amazing
Everything about our stay was wonderful! Mario and his wife were extremely hospitable, the castle itself was beautiful with the most picturesque view of the Tuscan countryside I've seen outside of postcards, the local town of Anghiari was a joy to explore (go visit Sylvia and Gianni at Da Alighieri, you won't regret it!) and we're already looking forward to visiting again. We would recommend anyone stay here.

Spectacular Views
My husband, son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren (ages 14,13,9) stayed at this beautiful castle for 1 week. The views from the mountain top were picture postcard quality. Mario and his lovely wife were very helpful in making sure our every need was met. The castle was extremely clean and the pantry was supplied with a day's (or more) groceries. Mario even provided some of his personal olive oil (which was wonderful). The town of Anghiari, which is a five minute drive away, was breathtaking. The castle was centrally located for day trips to any area we wanted to visit in the Tuscany region. We took the train (station 20 minute drive away) to Pisa and Florence. We would definitely stay at this castle again!

A beautiful, peaceful retreat
We arrived at the castle with plans to visit the many nearby attractions but found we often just wanted to relax and enjoy the peace and beauty of the area, where the only sound is birdsong and the lights you see at night are fireflies. But the castle is an excellent base to visit Siena, Arrezzo, Florence and other locations. Mario and his family made us feel very welcome and we appreciated finding the kitchen stocked with everything we needed for the first few days. We booked dinner in the castle on the first night and also scheduled the cooking lesson. Loved them both.

Holiday in a castle
The bragging rights alone went a long way with this vacation in a Tuscan castle. Even my Italian friends were very impressed. The topic did not need to arise that it was the least expensive way we had found to house our group of 6-7 family members. Anghiari is an adorable little town with a fun personality and quirky history (a statue of Garibaldi carries the inscription "Rome or death" from the march he made to recapture the caitpal from the French, the statue's arm points away from Rome. A local told me how the statue was purchased and brought in from another town when the Garibaldi memorial in Anghiari was broken. In order to show well in the center square, the statue was turned to face the residents and lead a march away from Rome.) Very near the castle is about the best pizzeria we found anywhere (il Bosco) and a quaint goat dairy which sells its own cheeses. Nearby are Siena, Cortona, Michelangelo's birth place, Assisi, San Marino, etc. Reasonable jumps on the train are Florence and Rome with architecture and history, Bologna and Modena homes of Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini. Be sure to chat with Mario about your likes, interests and plans, he has invaluable connections and advice for the area. If you are heading for Tuscany and will rent a car, I highly recommend staying here. The interior is modern and comfortable and the exterior, well...it's a castle!

A magical Tuscan vacation destination
Pianettole is even better than it looks in the pictures. We enjoyed this truly enchanting place. We were 3 women on our first trip to Italy, with the intention of exploring nearby towns and cities by car. The castle is immaculate & beautifully decorated. There is food and wine in stock to last until you get to the store. Mario was very responsive to all our needs and questions. He is a charming host who gave us a tour of the whole place. History buffs will love all the coats of arms and Knights Templar symbols uncovered during renovations. I would remind people that the castle is out of the way, and up, up, up a long unpaved road (over a mile) with sharp turns that may be unnerving for people used to driving over flat landscapes. All in all, totally worth visiting. We enjoyed nearby Anghiari ,but especially the town of Sanselpolcro and it's great shops and restaurants. A special thanks goes to Louise, who was extrememly hospitable to us the first day, when we arrived to the area lost, tired and hungry!

Tuscany at its Finest!
We highly recommend Castle of Pianettole to anyone wanting to visit the Tuscany Region. We found the location excellent for everything we wanted to do or see. Most of all, as first time visitors to Italy Louise was extremely helpful to get our questions answered about the area, the castle and anything else you can imagine. After meeting Mario, Armenia and of course Lilly (one of Mario's trusted canines) Mary and I felt as if we were part of the family. The castle as well as Tuscany in general live up to all the photos we've seen. Finally... if you're interested in learning, expanding or sharpening up your Italian cooking skills... make sure you have Costanza, of Alimentari il Portico stop by the castle for an afternoon of cooking instruction! You'll enjoy it as well as the food you prepare!

Highly Recommended
We will highly recommend Pianettole to our family and friends. We found the location to be close to most everything we wanted to do or see, and Mario felt like a trusted friend by the end of the vacation. The castle, as well as Tuscany in general, live up to all the photos we've seen. Finally, we have fallen in love with Brunello di Montalcino wines, and will forever remember the stunning drive on the way to the area where these wines are produced.

wonderful
not sure if we have much to add to previous reviews except vigorous endorsement! beautiful place, great location for both spending time in anghiari and day trips across tuscany. mario was a wonderful host, and for the culinarily inclined we highly recommend the cooking classes offered by costanza -- tons of fun, and wonderful homemade tagliatelle. out of our month in italy, this was the most enjoyable place we stayed.

It’s hard to know where t...
It’s hard to know where to begin in describing how much we enjoyed our two-week stay in Pianettole in July 2008. The Castle itself, high on a hill with breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, is lovely. The guest rooms are attractive, and the care taken in the building’s restoration is apparent in many charming details. The kitchen is spacious and fully equipped, with ample space for six around the large kitchen table. The four bedrooms are attractive and comfortable, and the bathrooms – one in the main part of the guesthouse and the other associated with the fourth bedroom, which is accessed through a separate external door – are well furnished with modern fixtures. At the rear of the guesthouse is a furnished patio that makes a great spot to sit and relax at any time of day.Pianettole is just outside the strikingly beautiful medieval town of Anghiari (though it’s not practical to make the trip on foot unless you have the stomach for a taxing climb back up the hill to the castle). A few miles further on is the larger town of Sansepolcro, while about 30 minutes drive in the opposite direction is the bustling city of Arezzo. Anghiari has a number of charming shops and restaurants, as well as a weekly market, and is a great place to wander around and explore. Sansepolcro has additional conveniences such as several large supermarkets and a modern shopping center, as well as an interesting and picturesque older section, bounded by medieval walls. Major highways pass near Sansepolcro and Arezzo, which also has a railway station, making Pianettole an excellent base from which to explore the whole of Tuscany plus neighboring regions of Umbria, Marche and Emilia Romagna, or even San Marino. Siena, Florence, Assisi, Poppi and Cortona are all within easy driving distance, and we easily managed the longer drive to Pisa and Lucca as a day trip. This was our first trip to Italy, and we saw many wonderful things and fabulous places. However, what really made our holiday special was the remarkable warmth and hospitality of Mario and his parents, Sergio and Lina, who live in different buildings within the castle grounds. Mario was the perfect host: warm and friendly and always concerned to make sure that everything was O.K.. When we arrived, the well-stocked refrigerator helped us feel immediately welcome. On many other occasions Mario went to extra effort to try and make our stay a success, lending us his GPS system, and

My brother&wife, my husband&I stayed 1 week at Pianettole in September. The place was all we imagined and more. Restful, historic, picturesque, plus all the comforts of home. Our host, Mario was excellent. He seemed to have the ability to turn up when we needed something and provided excellent advice and recommendations. We are still talking about it and planning our next visit. Francine, Rejean Burnaby, B.C., Glenn & Arlene Oshawa, Ont.
