Curated and restored with respect for this building’s heritage while creating a contemporary high-end feel, this property has heaps of charm and character, and could not be better placed for exploring all that the historical Hanseatic Quarter of King’s Lynn has to offer. Large glass doors at the rear of the property open on to a tiny walled courtyard, bringing light in to the open-plan living space on the ground floor, while at the front original sash windows have been painstakingly restored. A small kitchenette, a stylish dining area and a gorgeous living room welcome you when you enter the cottage, and the ground floor also features a contemporary shower room.
An exposed, original lime wall that leads up the stairs also contains its original beam, which has been restored to preserve the character of the bricks. Look carefully as you climb the steps and you will see that very old gravestones were used within this wall, and you will also notice where the fire that destroyed part of this building in the 1700’s reached, leaving the bricks fire-kissed in its wake.
The owners have really loved this building, and this carries through to the first floor where there is a small double room and a more spacious master room, with a king sized bed and a galleried level with an additional sofa bed. The beds are all fantastic quality and feature touches such as hand-made mattresses and Egyptian cotton bed linen to ensure total comfort. But along with the care they have taken to reference the heritage of this property, no expense has been spared to make sure that there are modern conveniences throughout, including TVs in the bedrooms, Alexa controlled in-built ceiling speakers and efficient underfloor and central heating. It is really clear that the owners want you to adore this cottage as much as they have and it is absolutely doubtless that you will.
If you can tear yourself away, history lies in every direction as soon as you step out the door. The huge Benedictine Priory and parish church opposite the cottage was founded by Herbert de Losinga, first Bishop of Norwich, in 1101. The church itself contains some Norman work, but was rebuilt in the 13th century and is a must visit. In fact, the cottage directly opposite housed the church’s very own exorcist, and you can still find a carving on the former inn a few doors away that shows the devil chasing some poor soul through the streets of Old King’s Lynn. That inn was the very place that Nelson stayed while in training too. Of course there are some great places to eat, drink and shop within footsteps too, and just a short drive away lies Castle Acre, the Houghton, Holkham and Sandringham Estates, and Peckover House. For a change of scenery, you can be on the stunning Norfolk coastline in under half an hour too. Just perfect. You will be back!
