The fantastic beaches are a 10-minute walk and are popular with surfers and holidaymakers. Children will enjoy the park and aquarium in Tynemouth, with ice cream parlours and amusements in nearby Whitley Bay. The hidden fish restaurants along the beach are a delight, as is the historic priory and walk along to either North Shields with a bustling working harbour full of restaurants, perfect for fish lovers and home to the Tall Ships Race, or the other way along to Whitley Bay where the beautiful Spanish City has been fully regenerated and has a relaxing champagne bar and events. The promenade area that stretches this bit of coastline has all been modernised and is a gorgeous place to stroll along on an evening whatever the weather as there are plenty of places to stop off for coffee or a gin and tonic.
The priory in Tynemouth hosts some musical events and plays, dating back centuries; it sits on the cliff and can be seen from further afield. Only a few hundred yards away is the restored metro station which is nicknamed the ‘Covent Garden of the North’ and is home to a very interesting weekend indoor market popular for all ages. You can hop on a metro here to Newcastle take in the quayside or visit a theatre, gallery, and museum or enjoy the history and shopping. Tynemouth is close to a great road network which will take you in all directions over to Hadrian’s Wall in the west of the county or North up the stunning heritage coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where there are more golden sands and castles to explore.
