Great Location if you can book at the right price
Location - ideal for exploring the old town, the harbour and fort, and an easy walk to a quiet sandy beach. A much longer walk to the 'organised beach' which is far nicer but very crowded.
The hotel - we were in and out a lot and the hotel was lovely and cool even in the August heat. However, it's tiring walking up and down the steps and stairs if you are on the top floor, as we were. Restaurant as attractive as photos and food was excellent. The breakfast buffet was really nice apart from the orange juice.
The rooms were clean and comfortable. We had 109 which had views of the fort and the courtyard. 107 was at the front of the hotel and very dark due to the small windows. In 109, we could get wi-fi but it was unreliable. In 107, there was no connection.
Staff were generally pleasant and helpful, especially the lady who laid the breakfast tables and cleaned all our rooms.
We loved the town and ate out every evening, except for our first night. There are loads of places to sit and eat or have a drink and we spent a few afternoons at the beach. We travelled across Crete by bus and this was easy - everyone speaks English. Arriving at the town's bus stop was the most difficult bit - you can't get a taxi to the hotel as it's pedestrians or bikes only. It's not a difficult walk and we only had hand luggage but it's something to bear in mind if you arrive with suitcases or have mobility problems - of course, we could have hired a car but as we travelled with grown up children, we used buses without any difficulties. Looking online, there are several hotels like the Veneto and, of course, plenty of other alternatives. We liked the Veneto and our children thought it would have been perfect with 'proper' orange juice and wi-fi in the rooms. Personally, I would be more than happy to return BUT would consider all alternatives first - it's a lovely building and we had no problems with the hotel. In some places, the building would be exceptional but in Rethymno it is one of several.
